Kindergarten
With just one look into one of our kindergarten rooms, you'll notice something different about the curriculum at Academy. By the end of Kindergarten many of our students are able to read short stories and write meaningful sentences.
Our curriculum reinforces the tremendous importance of communication skills. Students with well-developed communication skills understand what others have to say and express their own thoughts and ideas in ways that are easily understood by others. A well-educated person is able to read, write, listen, and speak well.
Here, too, is where our students work on their ability to speak and understand Spanish. In addition, students learn about Hispanic history and culture. In our language arts curriculum, each student will:
- Understand the functions of language in the learning process
- Learn word-recognition skills and strategies, including phonemic awareness
- Acquire and uses grade-appropriate vocabulary
- Develop good writing skills
- Acquire critical listening skills
- Construct meaning from print
- Understand the purpose of writing as an important communication tool
- Connect reading and writing
